Dear readers, let me share this article on renunciation since Moon is in Pisces today. Although the Moon goes in Pisces every month, what makes it special is that Full Moon in Pisces happens only once or twice a year. As we all know, the moon represents our mind, and Pisces is a sign of renunciation, and hence this article perfectly makes sense.
I will talk about the qualities of each sign in separate articles later, but one such trait of Pisces is to surrender oneself to Supreme power and prepare the soul for the higher world.
Let's talk about a story to understand this renunciation. There was a famous king Bhartrihari of Ujjain. He has written three renowned poems, and one of those is Vairagya Shatkam. The king has many stories from love to lust to Vairagya, but let me focus on one such event today. I will cover others in subsequent posts.
When the king had enough materialism and learned his lessons by the betrayal of his beloved queen, he decided to renounce everything; his throne, kingdom, wealth, and his wives. He became a monk and went to deep jungles and mountains for peace and solace. He also wrote Vairagya Shatkam later on, which is a collection of one hundred verses on Vairagya.
As Bhartrihari was a powerful king, he had many enemies too. One such was Gopichand from neighboring kingdoms. Upon hearing the news of sudden renunciation by the king Bhartrihari , Gopichand also decided to renounce his kingdom and follow the path of Vairagya. They both spent many many years on the path of renunciation. One fine day they crossed each other's path. While roaming, Bhartrihari came near a pond and wanted to take a bath. He put all his clothes on a nearby tree branch and went for a bath. The other king coincidentally also came to the same pond and took off clothes and put them on the same tree branches. When both came out, they saw the clothes were mixed up. Both the kings got angry and started fighting with each other. At the same time, an old woman passed by, and she told them that you idiots are fighting for petty things and see our noble kings Bhartrihari and Gopichand have renounced their kingdom, wealth and wives and living life of monks. Hearing this, both the kings felt so ashamed of themselves. They thought that even though they have renounced their big kingdoms, they still clung to such small attachment. Carrying this new realization, the two trod their paths in search of the absolute truth.
They understood that they need to renounce all the egos first, and then real renunciation can happen.
