First of all, wishing you all a very Happy Guru Purnima. Yesterday we all celebrated Guru Purnima. Guru Purnima is the birthday of great sage Veda Vyasa. As the name indicates, this is the day to remember our beloved teachers.
Guru or teachers play a pivotal role in one's life. Our parents, usually the mother, is considered to be our first teacher. As we grow, we get many Gurus in our lives.
If we observe closely, kings in the path used to have Gurus, who used to advise them in all the matters. In older times, pupils used to go to Guru Ashram to learn all the Astra and shastra, sacred literature, etc. We all have heard about Guru Dronacharya, the guru of great Arjun. And probably we all can remember the biggest adviser of all times, Lord Krishna himself, who told Arjuna about his duties on the battlefield. We all know this biggest sutra as Sri Bhagwat Geeta. It was Chanakya who made Chandragupta the great king of all time. A Guru, an adviser, can make or break our lives. And we all know about Gautam Buddha, who taught us the path of spirituality and divine.
In today's world, we have our Gurus in the form of coach, guide, mentor, or Godfather. However, sadly most of these teacher-student relationships are driven by commerce, greed, and selfishness. Even in the professional field, we seldom find good mentors or coaches who guide one selflessly towards the path of success. Only privileged ones can find a true Guru who can help them realize the real value of this life and help them with the knowledge and wisdom required to attain the state of spiritual awakening.
If we think from an astrology perspective, Jupiter represents the Guru in our chart. Jupiter is considered the Guru of Deva, whereas Venus is considered as Guru of Asura's. Disposition and placement of Jupiter and Mercury and their harmony among themselves is a prime factor to determine how one would get their Guru or teacher.
I will leave you with the following lines to reemphasize the importance of Guru in one's life and again wish you all a Happy Guru Purnima.
गुरुर्ब्रह्मा ग्रुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः । गुरुः साक्षात् परं ब्रह्म तस्मै श्री गुरवे नमः ॥
