Today's topic is interesting and probably will defy the common belief that spirituality is only for sages. Let me start with a story first.
Once upon a time, sage Vyasa asked his son Shukhdev to go and learn from king Janak who had great wisdom. Shukhdev followed his father's advice and reached to king's palace. After welcoming him, king Janak asked Shukhdev about the purpose of his visit. Shukhdev told about his father's advice and showed his willingness to learn the higher spiritual knowledge from the noble and wise king. However, Shukhdev told the king that he was also puzzled by a question. "How a king who engages in worldly pleasures wealth, company of women and war can be a highly recommended spiritual teacher?"
King Janak realized his puzzled state and asked him to perform an activity as a test before he can consider Shukhdev as his pupil. He asked Shukhdev to carry a cup of oil on his head and go to every room of the palace and observe. If the oil fell on the ground, then the king wouldn't accept as his pupil. Shukhdev followed the king's order and did so. Once he finished, he told king whatever he saw and observed and also answered all the questions of the king. King Janak asked him how he visited each room, but still, he couldn't let any oil fell. Shukhdev replied that while he was observing each room, his entire focus was on the "oil" only. And hence no oil fell. King replied that similarly, while he lives in this work performing his duties as a king, father, husband, etc., he always keeps his focus on karma and spirituality.
What do we understand from his story? Since we got this birth, we have some karma assigned to us. We will have to perform our duties but the ultimate objective to complete our assigned karma while keep on progressing towards the path of Moksha.
I hope you like the short story, and it's moral. I will keep talking on this topic in my next blog also.
